Senior Executive Coach — Legal Industry
An opportunity to help shape the next stage of Mercier Talent Solutions
Mercier Talent Solutions is conducting a selective search for a senior executive coach to join our growing practice.
We advise and coach partners, associates, firm leaders, and senior business professionals at leading law firms. Our work is thoughtful, practical, and highly tailored. We understand the pressures, relationships, and organizational dynamics of law firms because our experience is rooted in the legal profession.
We are looking for an accomplished coach who shares our commitment to excellent work and is interested in becoming meaningfully involved in the practice over time.
The Opportunity
The Senior Executive Coach will coach partners, senior leaders, and other professionals at Am Law 100 and comparable firms. Engagements may address leadership development, executive presence, communication, management, delegation, time management, business development, career strategy, transitions, and other challenges facing lawyers and law-firm leaders.
The coach will also have opportunities to design and lead training programs, workshops, leadership-development initiatives, and retreats for lawyers and law-firm professionals. This requires the ability to translate sophisticated leadership concepts into practical, engaging programs tailored to the needs and culture of each firm.
The coach will work closely with Julia Mercier on engagement strategy, client context, sponsor relationships, and quality. The role requires an ability to support the individual coachee while understanding the broader objectives of the firm sponsoring the engagement.
Over time, the right person may assume increasing responsibility for client engagements and contribute to other aspects of the practice, including assessments, facilitation, program design, and client relationship management.
We are deliberately open to different structures. The relationship could take the form of part-time or full-time employment, a regular consulting arrangement, an affiliate relationship, or another integrated model. It could also begin in one form and evolve as the relationship and practice grow.
The right structure will depend on the candidate’s experience, interests, availability, and desired level of involvement. More important than the initial structure is finding an exceptional coach who is interested in close collaboration and in assuming greater responsibility for client work over time.
Location
Candidates may be based in any major city in the United States. Our clients are located across the US, Canada, as well as in London and Paris.
Mercier Talent Solutions is based in Connecticut and works frequently in New York. The opportunity to spend time together periodically in New York or Connecticut is not required, but it would be a welcome bonus—and a nice counterpoint to all those virtual meetings.
Some travel for client meetings, retreats, programs, or other in-person work will be part of the role.
Essential Qualifications
Candidates must have:
- Practiced law in a law firm or similarly sophisticated legal environment
- Significant experience coaching partners and senior leaders in Am Law 100 firms
- A strong understanding of law-firm culture, partnership dynamics, client demands, and professional expectations
- Formal coach training through a respected executive-coaching program
- Experience designing and facilitating sophisticated training programs for lawyers or other senior professional audiences
- A record of establishing credibility with highly accomplished and discerning professionals
- Excellent judgment and the ability to navigate sensitive, confidential, and politically complex situations
- A thoughtful, practical, and candid coaching style
- The ability to understand both the coachee’s objectives and the sponsoring organization’s interests
- Exceptional communication, relationship-management, and organizational skills
This is not an entry-level coaching opportunity. Applicants must already have substantial experience coaching senior lawyers and leaders.
Additional Experience We Value
The following experience would be particularly useful:
- Coaching law-firm managing partners, practice leaders, office leaders, committee chairs, or other senior firm leaders
- Parth to partner coaching and senior associate coaching
- Conducting or debriefing 360-degree assessments
- Coaching senior business-services professionals
- Designing and leading leadership-development programs, workshops, retreats, and other professional-development initiatives for law firms
- Working with performance, interpersonal, or leadership challenges requiring particularly careful judgment
- Supporting business development, succession, or leadership transitions
- Experience with Hogan, DiSC, MBTI, or other established assessment tools
- Experience in law-firm talent management, professional development, or organizational leadership
How We Work
Our clients expect a high degree of sophistication, responsiveness, discretion, and care. We do not apply a standard coaching formula to every engagement. We work to understand the individual, the organization, and the context in which development must occur.
Our approach is warm and supportive, but also candid and focused on meaningful progress. We help clients translate insight into specific changes in behavior, relationships, and performance.
The coach who joins Mercier Talent Solutions will learn our approach and standards while bringing their own experience and perspective to the work. We are looking for someone who welcomes close collaboration, thoughtful feedback, and shared accountability for the quality of every engagement.
Compensation
Compensation will reflect the structure of the relationship, the candidate’s experience, and the scope of responsibility. Depending on the arrangement, compensation may include salary, engagement-based compensation, performance-related incentives, or a combination of these elements.
The structure and compensation model will be discussed openly with qualified candidates.
